The move to EC2

I, like many others have recently moved my server infrastructure over to Amazon EC2. I’ve had some services set up via Amazon for ages and ages but I felt it was finally time to move our hosting solutions over to Amazon too.

Amazon provides a stable, sexy, secure and fast infrastructure for us to host and publish on. It is far more reliable than any self-maintained hardware and better than any other VPS host I’ve used. They also provide our services at a fraction of the original cost hence allowing our services to you to be a fraction of the original cost too.

All my personal backups are done through S2 already and I’ve found it reliable for months. There are various different programs around that allow you to back up your own documents, pictures, etc to the cloud via Amazon.

2010 Australian Election

So it’s still going strong, but at this point in time it is starting to look like either LNP win or a hung parliament.

My main attachment to this election is of course the National Broadband Network or NBN. It will only be implemented if the ALP wins so OH SHIT at the moment.

I will edit this post when we have a final result, until then I’m glued to the TV / Live Tweets.

Mad Men

So I’ve started watching Mad Men, partly because I’m interested in marketing, partly because I saw a trailer on IMDb. So far it’s turned up a few great quotes and above is one of them. I can honestly recommend that you start watching this show, go borrow it or buy it (on Blu Ray preferably). Let me know what you think.

Feedback Problems

So I recently bought a new case for my computer. It’s a pretty sexy case but I bought it mainly to combat overheating issues in my old case (which had only one fan). Since this time I’ve been having issues with my sound. It creates a low but loud humming noise that starts as loud as it gets and doesn’t stop until the speakers are unplugged or the desk is sufficiently bumped.

My eventual fix was to use my G110′s built in USB sound. I’m planning to buy a sound card as a more permanent fix to this, as using my keyboard, while cheap and easy, isn’t the best cable management and probably isn’t the best sound either.

Apparently YouTube no longer likes Handbrake’s encoding methods. So the beginning of my videos are are distorted and gray. If you have any suggestions or ideas on how to fix this, advice would be appreciated.

In personal news: I had a haircut today. Isn’t it sexy? Well I thought so. I can actually see again now and this makes me happy.
